A short history….
The Sherwood Forest Estates Fire District (SFEFD) officially came into existence in 1989 after a group of concerned neighbors met with Coconino County officials and collected signatures from the required 51% of owners needed to establish a fire district. For the first few years, the District contracted with the City of Williams for fire protection.
By 1993, the District had successfully negotiated with the US Forest Service to lease a parcel of land on the north end of Little John. It had also saved enough money to erect the first building. Building 1 is dedicated to Olan Dunn, one of the founding board members, who coordinated the construction of the building and acquisition of the first fire engine from the State Land Department.
For many years, Fire District Board meetings were held in the home of Wayne “Chris” Christensen, another founding board member, until July 19, 1994 when the Board held its first meeting in the newly completed Fire Station.
By 2002, the District had added an office and restroom to the original building, five vehicles, and numerous smaller pieces of firefighting equipment. Building 2, dedicated to Wayne “Chris” Christensen, also was completed in 2002 and added 4 apparatus bays.
